Level 4 opens the intermediate stage. It's the biggest jump so far: 1,000 new words, taking you to 2,000, and 441 more characters to recognise, which brings you past a thousand. The handwriting list adds another 150.
A lot of the new material is linking words and two-part patterns, things like 不仅…而且 and 无论…都. They matter more than their word count suggests, because they're how longer sentences hold together. The vocabulary book explains each one where it comes up.
The vocabulary book has the 1,000 words in 100 units with a review after every ten. The writing book has the 150 handwriting characters. As at Level 3, the speaking test is registered together with the written one.
Counts are from the HSK syllabus published by the Center for Language Education and Cooperation in November 2025 (in force from July 2026), which is what HSK 3.0 uses.
